Glitch Western Rodeo roundUp

exhibition, episode 1
Glitch Art Gallery, in 台北,台灣 (Taipei, Taiwan) && online

Indigenous Futurism opens the Glitch Western Art exhibition, leading us to futures created by Oji Cree Anishinaabekwe artist NFTipi. If you are wondering 'what is Indigenous Futurism?' then spend time with NFTipi's art. Consider how she combines the most recent technologies of Digital Art, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) with science fictional inspirations, Indigenous knowledge, and the facts of her traditional tribal influences. Working from her lived experiences in the present she envisions the futures. Her works in this exhibition, ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐤ ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐤ ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐤ (888), ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐓᒥᑕᓇᐤ ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐓᓵᑊ ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐤ (eighty eight-eight), and ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐓᒥᑕᓇᐤ ᐊᔨᓈᓀᐓᓵᑊ ᓀᓱ (eighty eight- two) use her signature style in AI Art to glitch the Western further by locating her Northern Indigenous tipi-fi in Far Eastern settings. As she says of this series, which was also featured in the THAI NFT Festival in Seoul, South Korea: “tipi travels to futurist asia to see friends!”

The cowGirl arrives in our Glitch Western world, ushered into existence by Brazilian contemporary artist Estelle Flores. Working across blockchains, Flores brings her creations through many different technologies of simulation. In this series, called realGirls, she describes her work as “outputs from my models of Stable Diffusion AI fine-tuned to the style of Contain Real Ingredients, my first NFT collection, consisting of images made inside the game The Sims 4.” Her previous series, that she refers to, Contain Real Ingredients, is a collection of “paintings made by sims based on the reference photos they take inside the game.” From these perspectives, we can see the cowGirl’s journey out from The Sims game environment, through AI and ML, to emerge in her vivid realness encoded here. Now, here, Flores’ cowGirl greets us with her ethereal smile and uncanny eyes, looking past us, into whats ahead, Out West.

[ELEC·TRIC·I·TY] in the AI Glitch Western world brings the glitch to the surface. A lone rider, outside The General Store, watches as the electrical storms set the horizon on fire. Bolts of lightning cut The Sky from top to bottom && backAgain. AI Glitch breaks out of the pages of the strangebook called “mechnicalInterventions.” [ILLUSTRATION #3V0211T] is a work from my series “mechanicalInterventions: The Artificially Illustrated Glitch Western Primer for Machine Learnerrs." This book tells stories from inside 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown)™ a place you haunt as glitch/ghost, a landscape of broken [I-ˌLEK-ˈTRI-SƏ-TĒ]s that runs like rainbows past the mountains.

The bad man? Yes! In our Glitch Western world John Wayne is most certainly not the hero. Dezentral && MAXCAPACITY collaborate on The Badman. This Animated GIF, glitched from the 1969 film True Grit, transforms John Wayne into a glitch, a ghost, a skull, haunting our imagination of The West. The Glitch Western questions the quintessentially American genre of the Western and John Wayne is a hallmark of the Western genre. An archetypal ‘cowboy’ John Wayne was constructed on film to be larger-than-life with his cowboy character transcending the specific films he appeared in. He became a symbol. Dezentral && MAXCAPACITY take this symbolism as a raw material to rework and detourne. They take the meaning of John Wayne and the Western in a different direction. In their work the true grit of the glitch is the result of bitcrushing the colorspace values of this image. They wrangle the GIF format to produce a truly gritty and harsher, higher contrast version of the Glitch Western moving picture.

COWBOY by remikz takes the character of the cowboy deeper in this Glitch Western experience. Remikz renders the cowboy character as Death Itself, the Grim Reaper whois standing at the end of the line to close out this first episode of our Glitch Western Rodeo roundUp. Remikz works in one of the most recent incarnations of Glitch Art. Over the last few years, in the context of NFTs and Crypto Art, a new kind of extremely popular and potentially profitable Glitch Art emerges. This new redefinition of Glitch Art takes forms and inspiration from older traditions (hand-drawn animation, the Animated GIF, and analog noise [ie static]) while self-reflexively focusing on blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and their technosocial aspects. The artists working in this new kind of Glitch Art each have their own signature styles and shared aesthetics that connect them. - jonCates, curator
